1. Pola Kalimat Verbal
Untuk membuat kalimat tanya yang menggunakan "WH-Question Words" kita harus meletakkan "WH-Question Words" di awal kalimat (di depan kata kerja bantu) yang sudah dibentuk dari "Yes/No Question" (pertanyaan Yes/No) lebih dahulu. "WH-Question Words" adalah: What, Where, When, Why, Who.
Perhatikanlah kalimat berikut ini:
- I attend the class every day.
Do I attend the class every day? ( Yes/No question )
Who attend the class evey day? ( menanyakan subject )
What do you do every day? ( menanyakan activity )
What do you attend every day? ( menanyakan object )
When do you attend the class? ( menanyakan time )
Catatan:
Khusus kalimat tanya yang menanyakan "subject" tidak usah menggunakan kata kerja bantu "Do/Does" tapi langsung diikuti kata kerja bentuk pertama (kata kerjanya selalu ditambah akhiran "S" atau "ES" walaupun subjectnya jamak seperti You, They, We).
Contoh:
- They play football every week.
DO they play football every week?
Who plays football every week? They do.
- We know the answers to that question.
Do we know the answers to that question?
Who knows the answers to that question? We do.
- She works at IKIP Jakarta.
Does she work at IKIP Jakarta?
Who works at IKIP Jakarta? She does.
